The Final

I just wanted to go over what I said in class. In essence your final is to read and grade 12 student papers. Using this information, you need to then give three things (or low stakes writing assignments) that you will use to improve your student's work. I suggest that you use the Elbow book (specifically Chapter 1) to help you decide on those lessons.

You may also rely on Beers. If students struggle with inferencing or summarizing, then they may not be able to develop their essays well.

This is not a knowledge test. It is a chance for you to put in writing what I already know about you -- you have strong instincts and analytical skills. Use those instincts and analytical skills to develop ways to help your students. There are not right and wrong ways of doing this, just poorly supported ways of doing this. Meaning, if you can support your argument with student work or an author, such as Elbow or Beers, you will be on the right track.

I have enjoyed watching your thoughts on education grow over the course of the last four weeks. I am certain that there will be 19 different approaches on this assignment, and it is possible that all of them makes sense and are justifiable.

Please let me know if you have questions. I will be around this evening to answer emails.

REMINDER

Your Literacy Interview/Observation is due tomorrow at the beginning of class. The requirements are listed on the syllabus.

Check out this school http://www.bxmaa.org/. I heard that they are hiring an English teacher, but they may need more.

Good Luck!

Anne

Job -- Check it out.

Email the Assistant Principal, Brenda Gonzalez at bgonzalez@schools.nyc.gov.

Your Work Today

I just wanted to make a formal comment about how much thoughtful work I saw in class today. I loved it. There was a good energy, and it wasn't about being perfect. Rather, you were being thoughtful. This is what separates great teaching from good teaching. It was awesome to see.

I am so excited to see all of your work tomorrow and Thursday.

If you have any burning questions, I will be around tonight. Feel free to email. I will get back as quickly as possible.

Keep up the good work.

Handouts You will need for the Week of July 27th

First, check out this web stite: http://www.nysedregents.org/ It has old exams for high school, middle school, and elementary in all subject areas. I suggest that you check the exams, specifically if your students will be tested in those areas.

Click here to download the portion of the Comprehensive English Regents Exam we will be working with in class. You do not need to print this, however, you need to have it in class with you on a computer, iPod, Blackberry, or some other device to reference the document.

Also, please download these documents. There is only one document that you need to have a hard copy of. I named it print me. The other documents in this folder are for reference only.

If you are having struggles with printing, you can go to the 96th street branch of the NYC Public Library. I just printed there today, and I found out that you actually get the first 10 pages you print for free.

Hope this helps!

Blank Lesson Plan Format

Here is the blank lesson plan format in a PDF for those of you who struggled to open it in Word.

Please have a copy of it in class tomorrow. It is expected that you hand me a copy of your lesson when you do your read aloud in class. You should use this format.

Handouts for Class on Monday, July 19th and Tuesday, July 20th

You will need these handouts for class on Monday and Tuesday. We will be completing them in class and handing them into me by the end of the class that day. The completion of these handouts will be part of your Read Aloud grade.

Handout1

Handout2

You will need a blank lesson plan format (just erase the information from my lesson plan, which you should have downloaded in word). You will also need a copy of my lesson plan. You should have all of this on Monday, July 19th.

If you would like to see how I will be grading you here is a copy of the rubric I will be using.

Also, we will be working with the assessments we discussed earlier (the Slosson, Brigance, and Gates MacGinitie). Be prepared with them as well as questions.

Read Aloud Model for Thursday, July 14th

Here are the handouts you will need for Thursday's Read Aloud Model.

Click here to download them. Print all of the Read Aloud Model documents. This is 3 pages. You do not need to print the standards. We are going to go over them, but you do not need to print them.

As I outlined on the syllabus, here are the requirements for the read aloud:

1. Give a warm up or do now that activates prior knowledge.
2. Include a measurable lesson objective.
3. Use ONE reading skill or strategy in the lesson objective.
4. Include a review of the skill or strategy written in student friendly language.
5. Include text questions that relate to the objective and strategy being taught.
6. Ask approximately 1 question per paragraph or page.
7. Use the appropriate number of pages for the selected age group.
8. Use a book appropriate for the age group.
9. Includes a summary to the lesson.

All of these elements are in my lesson plan, and we will spend Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday going over this in class.

Happy Trails.

Clip 2

Please watch this clip and respond by midnight on the 18th of July. You should write at least 2 responses. Be sure that you're responding to your classmates.

Happy posting!

Use the Beers text and Articles 1, 2, 3, and 4 to support your answers.

(REMEMBER -- there are not really any right or wrong answers, just non-supported answers.)

o What strengths do you see/hear in the clip?
o What weaknesses do you hear/see in this clip?
o What would you do to deepen the students’ literacy skills?
o What do you think about your classmates’ ideas for assisting the
student? Did their ideas help you? Do you disagree with their ideas?

Re-Cap from Today

Hello!

First, I just want to tell you how great your questions and your curiosities are. I know you are on the right path because of your questions -- not your answers!

Second, on assessments, if you are having a hard time downloading the assessments, then email me. Also, try one or two of the assessments out in summer school if you can. If that is not possible, choose one and spend some time with it -- see if they make more sense. We will discuss these again in class.

Third, on the readings. Be prepared to use the "Teaching Disciplinary Literacy to Adolescents: Rethinking Content- Area Literacy" article in class tomorrow. Please read "STRIKING DIFFERENCES: THE IMPACT OF MODERATE AND HIGH TRAUMA ON READING ACHIEVEMENT" as well as ""Just plain reading": A survey of what makes students want to read in middle school classrooms" and think about what we learned about Snoopy. We will re-visit these concepts next, so please be prepared with these articles as well.

Finally, keep up the good work. I look forward to class tomorrow.

Books that Middle School Kids Like

Here is a list of books that are good for middle and high school kids. The kids in my classes picked out most of these books. Sometimes I added in stuff that I think they will like or be good for them.

I am working on getting a list of elementary school books from an elementary school teacher.

I just copied and pasted from my old order forms with out a lot of editing, so some books are listed a few times. This tells you just how much the kids like them because I've ordered them so many times!

Good Luck!

Great Comment -- Thanks Sarah!

Sarah wrote the following in the comments section of this blog. I wanted to make sure that everyone saw it!

*************************************************************************************

So I didn't know where to post this, but I found this Op-Ed New York Times Article that addresses the power books have, versus the internet, on student learning. This is one of my favorite quotes from the article:

"But there was one interesting observation made by a philanthropist who gives books to disadvantaged kids. It’s not the physical presence of the books that produces the biggest impact, she suggested. It’s the change in the way the students see themselves as they build a home library. They see themselves as readers, as members of a different group."

As educators we should not only teach our students how to read, but make them believe that they are readers. This idea is extremely important if we enter a school that does not the funding to provide a library in a classroom. It made me reflect upon my experience with reading, and the effect having a little library must have had on my identity as a reader.

Here is the article if you want to check it out:

Assessments

If you click here you can download a zipped file of reading and math assessments.

I will make time to discuss them on Monday. These are commercial assessments that are usable on an IEP. I have given you assessments from three different publishers -- Brigance, Gates MacGinitie, and Slosson. I will be making reference to these documents on Monday. Please have hard copies of them.

I will only be discussing the reading assessments. You don't need to have hard copies of the math assessments.

Jobs.

Here is a job posting I saw. This school has a strong reputation for working well with tough kids.
